innovates

University-wide initiative to advance IU entrepreneurs

IU Innovates serves as a front door for IU entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs to access the programs, people, departments, and resources that support students, faculty, and staff who wish to start companies, commercialize innovation, and/or explore entrepreneurship activities.

Core to IU’s strategic plan 2030 pillars of student success, transformative research and creativity, and service to the state and beyond, IU Innovates ensures entrepreneurs know where to start, and continually access the right resource at the right time.

IU Innovates takes an entrepreneurship ecosystem approach. This means we account for all entrepreneurs and those who support them. We build on strengths, highlight impact, and connect people to each other. The foundation of our activities is a culture of helping each other.

How to get involved

Front door to IU’s entrepreneurship ecosystem

During the 2024-2025 academic year, if you are a student, faculty, or staff member and are interested in entrepreneurship, please stop by IU Innovate’s headquarters at the Von Lee building, 517 E Kirkwood Ave, on Thursdays at noon for lunch.

Thursday lunch and coworking (before or after lunch) is the best way to get a birds-eye view of IU entrepreneurship resources and to meet others in this community. Follow along at the IU Innovates LinkedIN page for additional details.

Community membership

For IU entrepreneurs who are spending a few hours per week actively working on an idea or startup, IU Innovates provides a community space plus pre-incubation resources, including coworking, camaraderie, facilitated founder peer groups, a slack channel, networking opportunities, and navigation to the wide variety of resources at the university and beyond. To become a member of the community, please first stop by the Von Lee on a Thursday and fill out this form letting us know more about you and your startup. Community membership is available to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff at Indiana University.

Sparklab Incubator

The mission of the Sparklab Incubator is to support student education through experiential learning of the entrepreneurial process. Sparklab is open to any student (undergraduate and graduate) and to any type of business venture. The program helps students launch, grow, and sustain their own business ventures. To be eligible for Sparklab, students must spend more than 10 hours per week on their startup. Additionally, students must already be members of the IU Innovates community, demonstrate ongoing commitment and accountability towards their business, and take an active role in serving and strengthening the IU Innovates community.
